A change of scenery, a Tapetenwechsel, gives you distance and allows you to look at life from a different perspective, From A Distance.

One of my long runs, when I do them, is from home to Réalt na Mara, or: Star of the Sea, at the end of North Bull Wall on Bull Island. By the time I get there, I am usually out of breath. Passing it on the ferry is a very different story. What is there hasn’t changed. It’s my perspective that makes all the difference.

That’s why holidays are so important. They allow you to look at your life in a different way.

And they always let you experience something new, different, interesting, and even funny.

Like the “Irish Ferries” flagship Ulysses being registered in Limassol on Cyprus. Spotting the iconic Poolbeg Stacks sticking out between the ferry’s chimneys. Or learning (and tasting) the difference between a “burrata” and a “burrito”. Having a bit of Currywurst on a stick at the Eidersperrwerk. Or just feeling the hot sand under your feet and running down between your toes.

I cannot remember when I came back from my holidays relaxed, rested, and recharged. There is always too much going on and there are too many physical and mental demands.

But the change of scenery, the Tapetenwechsel, different and at times new experiences or even tastes, always open my eyes and my mind. They allow me to see what is important in life.

Perhaps the most important lesson is: I need to keep going. Not because it’s easy or because I knew the destiny or even the direction. But because standing by is not enough.

Keep going.
